2002 Saab 93 Aero Silver
This has to be one of my all time favourite Saabs, the later Aero models feature a spectacular body kit by the legendary car designer, Ian Callum which really does give this a timeless and rather iconic presence. I’d still call this out as one of the prettiest convertibles ever crafted and gives endless pleasure at a stupidly low price, it’s also one of the last Saabs to have been 100% built in Sweden
Discovered in a Welsh field, this Aero had been off the road for the past year, it was literally dragged onto a trailer, shipped to the ever patient folks at Malcolm Miles and lovingly caressed back to life, the original engine had been left to sludge up and was unrepairable, so a new 57,000 mile engine was sourced, all performance parts transplanted and a rigorous maintenance check undertaken. The Aero had numerous perished hoses changed, brake pipes replaced and a general overhaul to ensure continued reliability. The brakes have been completely replaced, including, discs callipers and pads, whilst the suspension has been upgraded with Bilstein B8 shocks and Eibach lowered springs, a near perfect set of 2 tone Turbo X 18” alloys have been added together with the excellent Pirelli Potanza tyres all round.
A 3” stainless steel downpipe has been coupled with a full stainless steel Jetex exhaust system DO88 intake pipes, a TD04 Turbo, MapTun Dump Valve and a Noob Tune ECU remap have given the convertible a beautifully smooth and progressive power drive, whilst still ensuring legendary reliability for years to come
Being 16 years old, it has a genuine patina with very minor marks which I feel are part of the Saab’s story, and although the bodywork is exceptional, there are a couple of areas of surface rust that might need addressing in the future, for now though, it flew through a new MOT with no advisories and has been given a good clean underneath and a coat of protection added where required.
The front seats were terrible, with large holes and cracked leather, these have now been changed with another pair of supple Aero electric memory seats, and feature subtle Turbo lettering as do the rears. A new leather gear knob has been sourced and an aftermarket stereo replaced with the excellent original head unit again, the dashboard is full Carbon Fibre which adds a final touch of style to the interior.
The spend has been close to £5k to keep this beautiful Aero on the road, so offers fantastic value at £2500 (with a set of Saab 17” Nailhead alloys) or £3500 (with the current 18” Turbo X alloys)
*All Aeroriginal Saabs have a Gentleman’s Agreement of a 3 month, £500 mechanical warranty which will always need to be under the capable care of Malcolm Miles Saab.
This is paid by me directly and reinforces my belief in just how great older Saabs are.
