I’ve said this many times before, but ever since I first started to notice Saabs, there was one that just epitomised the brand; the stunning 9000 Aero. It wasn’t just its Bauhaus sharpness or timeless elegance, but the interior too, as any Saabist will confirm, the interior of a 9000 Aero is exceptionally special. The seats; designed by Recaro, remain some of the most ergonomic seats ever crafted, they coset you in a way modern design can only dream of doing, and 25 years on, their comfort still remains.

9000 Aeros are becoming increasingly rare, in fact, according to How Many Left, this is one of only 100 or so genuine Aeros currently on the road in the UK. This beautiful Silver Aero has only been owned by 2 previous families and covered just 107,000 miles, it’s a Saab that has been known and maintained by my Saab specialist; Malcom Miles, since 2008, but for the past few years, had been left on SORN and had begun to deteriorate.

After a major mechanical overhaul and recommissioning, it has once again emerged as an exceptionally enjoyable Aero to both own and drive. Together with new Saab suspension, Abbott Racing lowering springs, new brakes and numerous parts, the 9000 has also benefitted from a new stainless steel Jetex exhaust and a very capable 275hp remap by Karl at NoobTune.

The iconic dashboard has been given a new lease of life again with bulbs replaced, the original Saab audio refurbished and the Rocky Black leather deep cleaned, colour corrected and moisurised.

It drives spectacularly well; smooth, quiet and relaxed with crisp gear changes whilst the added stability from the upgraded suspension and MapTun brace is noticeable on more spirited drives. The stance has also been improved with billet aluminium spacers all round to widen the track and push the beautiful Super Aero alloys out in their arches to great visual effect.

The underneath of the 9000 has been cleaned, welded where necessary and given a good coat of rust proofing for the future, the front passenger wing has been replaced with a genuine Saab wing and a number of panels have been given a refresh of paint, but not too much to take away from the honest patina that only 25 years can offer.

This 9000 Aero will make someone very happy, a modern classic that easily holds its own against many newer cars, and can travel hundreds of miles delivering you to your destination in utter comfort, safety and style.
