Iconic Saab Design

I recently did a small post on Instagram about the Saab ALU36 wheels - in my opinion, Saab designed some of the most beautiful OE wheels ever produced, their iconic 3 spoke structure is a key feature in many of their designs, from the original 900 Aeros to the Turbo X - all had the same 3 spoke structure.

I’ve long admired the purity of the ALU36 wheels, and again, with the same 3 spoke design, only double. They came standard on the Saab 9-3 HOT Aeros, and were also optional on the Saab 9-5 model range, suiting both equally well.

I love their sculptural form, the way they help elevate the car’s intrinsic beauty, the subtle concave surface drawing the eye to the Saab identity at its core. I never fail to be impressed by Saab design, a true masterclass in refinement and simplicity.

Of course, many folk agreed with me and also suggested other, equally stunning Saab wheel designs, but what I adore most, is to see how people put their own mark on the same wheels. I received messages from a number of people, but 2 stood out, and wanted to share their wonderful take on the ALU36 wheels for others to be inspired by.

Another Saab Year Begins

January 3, 2024 Eleven

I woke up on the first day of a new year, and was welcomed by beautiful sunlight. The constant rains had stopped for a moment, and blessed us with a bit of much needed sun, what made it even more rewarding, was the light gleaming off the freshly cleaned super Aero alloys on the 9000.

It made me think of two things; firstly, that life moves fast, here we are at the start of year another year already, and as I get older, it seems to go even faster. Secondly, how stunning are those Super Aero alloys?

Designed by Saab in the early 90’s, they have become some of the most iconic wheels in Saab’s history, in fact, I’d go so far to say, they’ve become iconic in the wider automotive world too.

Despite their petit 16 x 6.5 size, these alloys look large against the 9000’s silhouette, the expanse of bright metallic silver and matching hubcaps hide the wheel bolts and are aesthetically, perfectly balanced. Tyres are 205/55/16 and enhance that wonderfully comforting, old school look even further.

Here’s to another year, of health, happiness and Saabs.

Saab Design Study

There are numerous reasons why I believe Saab made such exceptional cars, not least, their infinite design capabilities. Driven by both form and function, Saab managed to bless us with superior innovation and refined details for some 66 years.

I've always been so impressed with Saab Design, that I thought it was about time I shared a few of them occasionally. As I'm currently in the process of saving a 1997 9000 Aero, I'll begin with one of my personal favourites; Super Aero alloys part numbers: 400100491 / Cap 400100707. 16 x 6.5" with an offset of 27. These stunningly simple, 3 spoke wheels managed to help give the 9000 Aero a totally unique aesthetic.

Manufactured by RONAL, the Super Aeros have the ability to look larger than they actually are, and is one standard wheel I can't bare to change. These wheels suit the 9000 so perfectly I can't imagine the Aero models with anything else.

For my 9000 project, I've chosen to have them fully refurbished and powder coated in a darker metallic grey, this will help create a contrast to the Silver paintwork and help highlight the Rocky Black Aero interior even further. It wasn't a standard option when the 9000 Aero was launched, but feel it adds a touch of individuality without compromising its overall design integrity, my whole reasoning behind Aeroriginal.
