MapTuner Nano NX3

One of my current Saab rescues, is the 2005 9-5 2.3t Vector, I can't deny my fondness for the Smoke Beige Metallic saloon, it's one of my all time favourite Saabs, and there's not many of them around in this condition. Add to that, it's only ever had one owner, it's got a lovely specification, and also low miles, but it had one obvious flaw - not having the higher output Turbo of the Aero.

Alongside various maintenance required, it's also had the larger Mitsubishi TD04 Turbo installed, this immediately takes it to the same engine setup as the standard Aero besides the mapping of the ECU; the standard Vector was 185hp, whilst the standard Aero was 250hp.

However, thanks to the support and generosity of MapTun, Sweden, they sent over one of their clever MapTuner Nano NX3 units, together with their connecting cable for me to try. I've been wanting to try one of their maps for a while now, and this gave me the perfect opportunity. For this particular 9-5, I wanted a subtle remap to enhance, rather than dynamically change its overall driving characteristics; it's an auto gearbox twinned with the Saab lowered performance suspension, so a lovely, comfortable cruiser, the Nano NX3 with the Stage 1 TD04 - 270 Hp/380 Nm map was exactly what the car needed.

Install was as simple as MapTun described, and as long as you have a decent wifi signal near the car when you perform the upgrade, it works flawlessly. I installed the accompanying app on my iPhone, paired that with the NX3, downloaded the relevant TD04 270hp file and prepared the car for the upgrade. We had to disconnect a few fuses turn all electrics off, and keep the battery on charge during the process. Thomas at MapTun was absolutely fantastic at being on hand for a few 'user errors' and advice along the way, but within 45 minutes, the file was installed and the Saab ready to test drive.

Immediate feedback - it felt quick, Stage 1 Aero quick, on acceleration, the new TD004 boosts instantly and the gear change clean and smooth; I never tend to hold the pedal to the floor in the autos, as they react beautifully to steady acceleration, building power through gears, rather than kicking down and screaming.

I've driven the 9-5 for a good 500 miles now, and been hugely impressed with the remap. I will be trying the various diagnostics and readings available on the app in the coming weeks, but wanted to share some initial thoughts. As less and less decent Aeros are available, this is an exceptionally viable way of transforming a Vector 2.3t into an Aero.

Thanks go out to Jason Miles for his endless wisdom on these Saabs, and Thomas at MapTun for his generosity and support. I've been hugely impressed by MapTun and their Saab products, they continue to invest in the research and development of many more products for our Saabs, it's people and companies like MapTun that genuinely make Saab ownership viable, their dedication to the brand is hugely appreciated my myself and many other global owners; please keep going.

Details Matter

It's been a few weeks since i've done an update on the current Aero builds, sadly, due to a lack of B12 Pro-Kits coming out of Bilstein currently, we've had to put the Green Aero on hold until we have all the parts ready to progress, we've been told January, so fingers crossed for that one.

I've been slowly making progress on the Hirsch 9-5; after all of the mechanicals were sorted back in October, the car has been driving absolutely beautifully, we've got to make a few adjustments on the new gear linkage, as 5th is hard to select and the Hirsch alloys will be coming off and going for a full refurbish together with a new set of rubber and balancing.

The main focus has been sorting the worn interior out, an exceptional flat base Nappa leather steering wheel has arrived from the folks at TunStyle, and as always, I truly feel to quality and craftsmanship is better than the genuine Hirsch ones I used to have, it really is a thing of beauty. I've got a new genuine Saab leather gear knob, gear gaiter and handbrake gaiter to fit, a new dashboard has been carefully wrapped in 3D carbon and the ugly Parrot system and wires will all be removed. The door card decorative strips have also had the carbon wrap and will be reinstalled next week together with a set of gorgeous MapTun carpets.

I'm still a little undecided about the seats, as usual, the dark fabric inserts are crumbling whilst the leather parts have worn beautifully, the cutting corners with materials really does show in these later 9-5s and just don't hold up as well as the earlier 'Saab' models, I might go with my heart and recover the entire seat set in a better quality Bridge of Weir leather, but always concerned that the value of these Saabs just don’t warrant that level of spend sadly.

As always, I'm truly inspired by the people out there that continue to work hard to craft parts to keep our Saabs looking sharp, in reality, it is getting harder to rescue them, the lack of Bilstein suspension kits has really hit me this time - will this continue to be the case, will Brexit make is far harder for the UK to get parts from the global community? will we slowly run out of Saabs worth rescuing? For now though, I have 2 beautiful Aeros that deserve to be pampered.

Aero Rising

December 14, 2018 Eleven

Just a couple of weeks ago, I became the proud owner of a 2001 Gen1 9-5 Aero, more to the point, it’s the first Gen1 i’ve owned, the other 6+ have been later models. Always loved the Saabness of these, the iconic front grille, the large, clean rear lights, and an interior that always looks and smells just so Saab. After over a year of Saablessness it’s a huge welcome return.

This one’s got some great heritage, originally the demo Aero for Adrian Smith Saab, then under the careful ownership of the Chief Constable of Cumbria until being purchased again by the old Director of Adrian Smith Saab again. Carbon Grey with Rocky Black interior, it’s a timeless combo i’ve always loved, the all important manual gearbox tops the spec to perfection for me.

After driving it for 2-3 days, it went in to the amazing folks at Malcolm Miles for its inaugural thorough health check - sump drop, new oil, filters, new brake pipes, vac pipes, handbrake springs and various other refreshers, but as ever, not content with leaving things standard, we started to undertake my fast growing list of individualism:

Bilstien B8 suspension
MapTun Springs
Poly bushes
Noob Tune Stage 3

What next? An APH Performance downpipe coupled to a full BSR stainless steel system, BSR Filter, carbon fibre dash, bespoke mesh grille and set of uber rare 19” Carlsson Turbo X alloys for starters, the bodywork isn’t perfect either, so will be given a bit of tlc to get back on top of things. It’s a baby with only 93,000 miles on the clock, so worth a bit of indulgence, above all, it’s another amazing Saab Aero kept on the road for years to come, giving me new lease of Saab life and the ability to get this blog going again.

THOUGHT

Why the hell don’t more people buy older Saabs, they’re stupid value, hugely reliable, more luxury than most modern exec barges and have an unnerving ability to be tuned to embarrass most so-called sports saloons, all for sub £5k. I don’t get people, 100,000 miles is literally nothing on these things, parts are still readily available, and find a great Saab specialist like Malcolm Miles and your sorted, there’s nothing they can’t fix, do it…
