Transparency

November 28, 2023 Eleven

Sometimes, leaving that stone unturned, is by far the best option; what you don’t know, can’t hurt as the saying goes, but sometimes, a little transparency allows you to take stock of a situation and ‘sensibly’ decide which road to take next. Over the years, I’ve bought, modified, rescued and enjoyed quite a few Saabs, I roughly keep track of what I spend on each, and when I come to sell them, I try and be as fair as I can with the asking price.

I suppose I’ve always known I overspend on each Saab, and often lose money, but until my recent projects, I’d never been totally honest and added up the spend. I’m annoyed with myself for not doing this exercise before now, but I enjoy the process, the sourcing of parts that make each and every Aeroriginal Saab a bit special.

Six months ago, I purchased the silver 9-5 Aero sport wagon, the idea was to hold on to this one and use it as my everyday Saab, but not one to leave things alone, I set about creating a car as close to a factory modified Hirsch Performance 9-5 as I could, obviously certain parts just aren’t available any longer, but thanks to a number of other Saabists, fantastic alternatives can be easily found.

For complete transparency, I thought I’d reveal the costs involved in getting a Saab to this level. Just to note, this is absolutely not a Concours car, it still has things to do and you’ll find daily wear and signs of its 20 year journey, but it’s a genuinely fantastic Saab and another I’m proud to have helped build.

Is it worth anywhere near the cost of doing it? Financially, the market for these amazing cars would never achieve enough to cover the costs. However, the satisfaction of seeing them honoured like they deserve to be is, in itself, hugely valuable.

Car £4995
Hirsch Performance Pack £1200
Hirsch Wheels £1200
Refurbishment £480
Tyres £440
Bodywork £2050
Mechanics £1250
Steering wheel £350
Badges, wheel centres, stickers £120
3” downpipe £345
Abbott Springs £312

Total Costs £12,742

Fettling

Anyone who knows me, will agree that I have strong views on aesthetics, I'll get an idea in my mind and will do everything possible to get it to that stage; homes, graphics, photography and of course, cars. Often, I like to modify them just enough to know something's been changed, but could easily be OE+, on other occasions, I feel a certain look was perfect already.

Hirsch managed to modify the Saab 9-5 Sportwagon in to something close to perfection in my view; a more aggressive stance, but not too low, a unique dual exhaust, iconic wheel design and engine upgrades that somehow enhanced the already impressive 9-5 Aero.

Having been lucky enough to source a full Performance upgrade pack from a friend, I then had to find a set of original 18" wheels and modify the suspension to recreate their masterpiece.

It's been through a few rounds of work, and it has just come back after more fettling, it's had the front bumper fully refurbished and resprayed, it's had a noisy air conditioning condenser replaced and system regass, a handmade 3” downpipe with sport cat, and also the front suspension changed again; we still had some knocking from the driver's side. It’s now running Bilstein B8 shocks and Eibach springs up front.

Overall, it's pretty close to what I wanted to achieve with this one, of course, there's always more to do, details to change and refinements to be made, but I have to keep reminding myself, these are daily drivers, cars to use and enjoy, they're not show cars and probably never will be. They're relatively low value compared to a lot of cars and investment in further fettling becomes pointless.

These Saab Aeros are exceptional value for what you get, increasingly rare, they offer wonderful comfort, enjoyment and individuality, they still feel quick alongside more modern comparisons and give you a wonderful sense of contentment, add the superb Hirsch touches, and it becomes something rather special in an everyday way.

How Much?

After recently finishing off these 2 stunning Saab Aeros, I carefully calculated how much I’d spent, took a chunky percentage off that cost and added them to the Aeroriginal page. I’ve had a lot of initial interest and questions about both cars, but no immediate sales. This always gets me to thinking about how much people think they’re really worth?

Am I flogging a dead horse trying to rescue these Saabs, does no one really want to pay more than a couple of thousand for a genuinely great car, or am I just bias and believe that these are a far better investment than many newer cars available at this sort of figure?

I’m genuinely interested to know people’s thoughts, I’m coming to yet another crossroads in my journey and feel I might just be taking these on for my personal enjoyment only. Although I feel Ebay is a poor auction site for anything out of the ordinary, it does give high visibility to a larger audience, so will end up listing these 2 beauties on there shortly.

In the meantime, I’d love to hear what others think they’re worth.

Griffin from the flames

It’s safe to say that if this gorgeous 9-5 Aero had been left for much longer, it would have been a very different outcome and might never have shone again. Mechanically, the sump had never been dropped and cleaned, the gearbox and engine oil were filthy (what was left of them) and not only had the oil cooler hose and unit been damaged, but the gearbox oil pipes had also deteriorated. Also the timing chain XX had almost worn through, and if it had gone completely, would have damaged the engine beyond sensible repair.

As it is, we’ve replaced everything that needed doing and the Saab undertook a 200 mile journey over the weekend and performed flawlessly. We haven’t added a Stage 1 remap from NoobTune yet, but the standard Aero boosts beautifully and exceptionally smoothly too. The cleverly utilised 9-3 Hirsch back box that Malcolm Miles fabricated together for me, looks and sounds great and adds a lovely touch of style and the new brakes and Abbott suspension feel as tight as the day it came out of the factory.

Whilst the interior is immaculate, the bodywork has plenty of patina; stone chips, dents and numerous marks, some of these we’ll address, but some will remain, this is an economy rescue and the original paint deserves to be honoured. We’ve given areas of corrosion underneath a good clean up, taking off surface rust and giving it a protective coat of Waxoil, we’ve also replaced one of the petrol tank straps that looked a little worse for wear.

To celebrate it’s rising from the flames, I gave it its first proper clean down and hugely excited by how it’s turning out, the 19” VXR alloys, although controversial to some, give the 9-5 a fantastic style and together with the Abbott springs, make the stance absolutely mesmerising.

I’m slowly machine polishing the entire car and once I’m done, it’ll go in for the worst panels to be repainted, most notably the passenger side rear arch, but overall, the Silver paintwork presents well.

This 9-5 Aero captures the reason I love rescuing Saabs, with the right mechanical work and with a few subtle modifications, they can be saved for many years, not only that, but they look spectacular, put a smile on your face and are becoming a rare sight on our roads. This one will be added to the Aerorignal pages very soon and will make someone very happy I hope.

Reassuringly Reassuring

January 24, 2022 Eleven

As the years pass and we watch our Saabs getting older, I find it reassuring that there seems to have been a real surge of interest in the brand of late; people are becoming more aware of their innovation, beauty and longevity. This will hopefully help to keep more of them maintained as they should be and ultimately, keep more of them on the roads for the future.

It’s been 10 years now since Saab manufactured a single car and yet their desirability doesn’t seem to have been lost. There are ones that have always been universally praised of course, the classic 900 for instance, but what’s reassuring is the appetite for other, later model Saabs too. The 9-3 and 9-5 are equally desirable and have seen asking prices increase recently, the 9000 is finally getting some of the attention it deserves and any model boosting ‘Aero’ is commanding even more of a premium.

As I’ve continued to source, rescue, drive and enjoy many Saab Aeros, one has consistently surpassed my expectations; the 1st and 2nd generation 9-5 Aeros. They’ve proved themselves to be not only exceptionally reliable and an absolute joy to drive, but with minor work to the handling, these Saabs can outshine many modern cars, for comfort, style and performance. Looked after, they show little sign of wear and equal iconic modern classics such as the Mercedes W124 and BMW E39, in fact, in many ways, better.

As new cars quickly change to alternative modes of fuel, be it electricity, hydrogen or other, I can’t help but think how important it is to maintain our Saabs. After all, they won’t be crafting any new cars, so what we have now, is what we’ve got.

Being somewhat of a collector has allowed me to compare my Saabs with plenty of other marques. I currently own several, and I find it reassuring that I’ll happily choose the Saabs over them and will continue to look after them for as longs as I can.

This exceptionally special 9-5 Aero, Hirsch upgraded from factory is currently for sale to make way for others to be rescued. Find out more.

Swedish Interior Design

April 14, 2021 Eleven

On each Saab Aero project I've done, there's one part that I always find most rewarding; the interior refresh. The early 9-3 and 9-5 both have beautifully designed, intuitive aesthetics, but they've also proved to be superior quality too, they've faired well over the past 20 years and with patience and hard work can be brought back to a seriously nice place to be.

They do of course have their Achilles heal, and these from experience are the seat bolsters, the dash buttons and screen pixels. The soft touch rubberised coating on the buttons wears off easily and can also become sticky to the touch, I always look out for units that have minimal wear, but these are getting harder to find now, there are fixes around, but originality to me is always key. For the 9-5 Aero, I've managed to source a set of new dash units that have excellent buttons and also no missing pixels, they slot in beautifully and always help to remind me just how exemplary Saab interior design was.

The seats are always another area of wear, mostly on the driver's bolsters, but if not looked after, the entire seat surface can become cracked and tired. I've found a set of sand coloured leather Aero seats from a 2005 model, these offer more side support and comfort and work beautifully in the gen 1, I've also added leather trimmed door cards from the later model, some minor adjustments to the boot and full buttons are required, but again, the results really add to the overall interior feeling. I'll be having some new leather handle covers made as the rubber coating on these too, tend to perish and flake off.

Ive removed the seats and given the carpet a good clean, the seats have been cleaned and moisturised, and all surfaces treated. Ive added a brand new Saab Carbon Fibre dash and also another beautiful Nappa leather steering wheel by TunStyle to finish it all of nicely. Ive even found a set of new, genuine Saab sand coloured carpet mats which really do work wonders.

Respect your Elders

April 8, 2021 Eleven

It’s no secret that I have a real addiction to the first generation 9-5 and 9-3 Aeros, there’s something very pure about them. In essence, it’s how Saab envisioned them, yes the cliché about being on GM platforms is obviously correct, but the truth is, they were designed by Saab, built in Trollhättan by the Swedes and any inherited parts that didn’t live up to Saab’s vision, were remanufactured to their own strict specifications.

It’s also becoming hugely difficult to find any half decent early Aeros to save, especially the 9-5. For whatever reason, their values in the past haven’t been considered good enough to warrant them being saved from rust, neglect or even breakers, but that seems to be changing rapidly, even poor ones are fetching higher prices recently, and hopefully, that in turn will manage to keep the remaining ones on the roads for us all to enjoy.

I’ve had this latest rare Scarab Green with Sand leather interior for over 6 months now, progress was ridiculously slow due to parts availability, mainly the Bilstein B8 suspension, but this finally arrived towards the end of February and the build progressed. Although it’s only had a few owners and has only covered 83,000 miles with full service history, it had a lot of niggling issues that required attention, it felt like a daunting list to begin with, but we’ve got through most of them now.

It has had the usual sump drop, clean, new gaskets, oil and filters, its had new braided brake hoses, arms, bushes and mounts sorted, and a rather large list of performance parts fitted:

DO88 Intercooler and pipes
APH Performance downpipe
Jetex stainless dual exhaust
Noobtune Stage 3+ remap
3.5 bar fuel pump
Bilstein B8 suspension
MapTun top brace
18” 6 spoke classic Hirsch alloys
Michelin Pilot Sport 4
Genuine Saab Carbon Fibre dash
Tunstyle Nappa leather steering wheel

The interior was an absolute mess, so I’ve also worked hard to bring that up to scratch again, new leather lined door panels, new 2005 Aero front seats for more support, a genuine Saab Carbon dash, Nappa leather wheel from Tunstyle, new genuine Saab sand carpet mats and all central units replaced with perfect buttons and no missing pixels. It’s getting there, next stop will be the bodyshop for some dent removal, bumpers removed and repainted and the minor rust points at the base of the rear arches again. After that, a huge clean inside, leather feed and pamper to see how it all comes up.

A while back I came across another site dedicated to Saabs over in Czech Republic, a few years on and I regularly talk to Lukáš who shares the same levels of passion for Saab as I do.

Great to see he’s just refreshed the site and it already features some seriously gorgeous photography, Saab Stance looks set to continue honouring our great cars and is also planning a gathering sometime in 2020. I’ll share the date, time and place as soon as I hear. Amazing work.

Dirt don't slow you down

A few weeks ago, I got a great email from Mark, it simply said 'Too many shiny cars, let's have some contrast.' And let's face it, he's spot on, who drives around in perfectly shiny Saabs all of the time?

Mine for one, is constantly dirty, I actually like it to look dirty, means it's been driven and enjoyed, where others are careful not to go on grass verges to let a car pass, or enjoy a full on drive in the pouring rain, mine gets stuck in. Drive it, enjoy it all, come rain or shine, wind or snow, our Saabs are built like tanks and can pretty much cope with whatever nature has to throw at us, even a bit of old fashioned dirt, and all in sublime comfort and individual style. Cheers Mark.

The Boss

February 11, 2019 Eleven
9-5_Full Front.jpg
9-5_Full Rear.jpg

Almost anyone who's followed and read this blog over the past 8 years will know I've had a fair few Saab projects. Some have required just regular care and maintenance, whilst others have required not only a leap of faith, but also implicit trust in someone who understands the beauty and complexity of Saabs, someone who's knowledge is second to none.

That someone is Jason Miles down at Malcolm Miles Saab in Leicester, he's been truly exceptional at understanding what I've wanted to achieve with each Saab, and has also never allowed anything to defeat us, it can always be fixed.

So, when Jason told me he was selling his 2009 Saab 9-5 Turbo Edition Sportwagon, Stage 5, I said I'd be more than happy to feature it on SvsS. Needless to say, if I hadn't already got 3 other cars including my current 9-5 Aero, I'd have been the proud owner of one of the most unique Saab Sportwagons I've ever seen or driven, it is truly stunning.

The ultimate sleeper, Jason's Carbon Grey 9-5 is subtle but menacing - the stance is perfect and rests on rare 18" Hirsch double 5 spoke alloys, the huge MapTun 4 pot front callipers and vented and grooved discs giving just a hint that this is no ordinary estate car, and as most people will always be behind this thing, the twin exhaust is another discreet touch that finishes the rear off to perfection.

Imagine searching for the perfect estate car, discreet but with a bit of attitude, supreme comfort for any journey no matter what distance, individuality and exclusivity but as reliable as a Saab (of course) and something that has enough power to embarrass pretty much any other car on the road, this is it, you've just found it.

Car was dyno’d December 2017 340BHP / 515NM

As you can imagine, it's got an impeccable service history too, oil has been changed every 3,000 miles or less, and with the shear amount of Saab experience Jason and his team have, this has got to be one of the most desirable Saab Sportwagons available.

Anything so unique or exclusive, think Mercedes E43 AMG, Audi S6, Alpina B3 comes with a massive price tag, but Jason's 9-5 is for sale at £7,500.

I truly can't think of another car that could offer quite so much at this price. Someone's going to be massively privileged to own this Saab.

Anyone interested, call Jason on 0116 283 9044

Inside Information

December 29, 2018 Eleven
Interior+1.jpg

Despite all of the ‘Born from Jets’ clichés that surround Saab, there can be little argument that the interiors share similar design details. From the green and orange illumination, beautifully crafted switchgear and toggle operated air vents to the genuinely unique ‘night panel’ function, ball joint map light, simple but effective ‘fasten seatbelt’ and the wonderfully functional fold out cupholder - a Saab interior can never be mistaken for any other marque.

Investing time and energy in to refreshing the interiors of all of my Saab projects has been an enduring love affair, worn buttons and blown bulbs replaced, leather cleaned, dyed and fed, carpets thoroughly cleaned and mats replaced with factory originals, hinges and locks lubricated and any squeaks and rattles detected and resolved.

View fullsize Interior 2.jpg
View fullsize Interior 3.jpg
View fullsize Interior 4.jpg
View fullsize Interior 5.jpg

Above all, I’m always amazed at just how hard wearing and timeless these interiors are, this 9-5 for example, was manufactured in March 2001, some seventeen years ago, it’s covered nearly 100,000 miles, had 3 previous owners and yet the interior could easily be mistaken for that of a new car, even the leather seats still offer an entirely unique aroma, one that is just so Saab and is an absolute joy to spend time in, it’s both relaxed and reassuringly refined.

I’ve sourced and fitted an original Saab carbon fibre dashboard rather than the plain grey one, and am currently searching for a 2001 sat nav head unit and rear parcel shelf bass speakers, but other than that, I can’t wait to just sit back and enjoy this unique and timeless interior a little more.
